Rigging ships (be they real or models) can be a difficult task
!! You should go to the library & check out a book on rigging. learn about
Standing Rigging & Running Rigging.
Here are two links on the basics:

http://modelshipkit.net/modelshipkit14.php http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rigging Lindberg isn't known for the best instructions or clarity. Also, with sailing ships, the BASICS are the same, but individual rigging will vary from ship to ship & year to year. The TRULY difficult thing on model ships is the Rat-lines. I had to build a jig or pattern for each mast on each ship. I took Revell is OLD (1970's) Constitution & stripped off all the old rigging (including plastic ratlines) & re-rigged the entire ship. It requires patience, sharp-eyes (or at my age magnifiers), nimble fingers, & MORE patience. GOOD LUCK !!
